Peru Description
Most travelers come to Peru to visit the country's most famous attraction: Machu Picchu. But Peru has much more to offer beyond the highly trodden sites in and around Cusco, the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu.
Lima, Peru's sprawling capital is the epicenter of Peruvian culture and commerce. Nearly all travelers fly into Lima and either fly or bus to other areas of the country.
In the North, ruins, beaches and some of Peru's highest mountains attract international travelers year-round.
In the South of Peru are the colonial cities of Arequipa and the very traditional indigenous city of Puno, bordering Lake Titikaca.
The eastern part of the country is dominated by the immense Amazon Rainforest.
History of Peru
In Quechua, the language closest to what the Incas spoke, Peru means the 'land of abundance.' Peru is full of extremes: from lush, towering Andes peaks to rolling sand dunes on the coast, to part of one of the biggest, most diverse rainforests in the world, the Amazon. Peru is also rich in pre-Colombian culture with millions of citizens in the Andes Mountains who still live, speak and work the way their ancestors did thousands of years ago.
Location of Peru
On the Pacific coast of South America between Ecuador and Bolivia and west of Brazil, Peru ranks among the world's top producers of silver, copper, lead and zinc. The Amazon makes up half of Peru, the Andes Mountains occupy a third and the rest is coastal desert.
