Set in a natural basin and surrounded by volcanoes like the San Salvador Volcano, San Salvador has potential, but falls somewhat short. It's crumbling concrete, traffic, and high crime rate are drawbacks that keep it from becoming a premier destination in El Salvador.
Nonetheless, San Salvador is centrally located and close to many of El Salvador's attractions. There are many activities close by to take advantage of like zip-lining on a Canopy Tour, visiting Joya de Ceren, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, or hiking to to the beautiful volcanic Lake Coatepeque, an hour away. There are important Mayan sacrificial sites like Devil's Door (Puerta del Diablo) nearby as well.
