Many are suprised to find that El Salvador, Central America's smallest nation, has some of the best surfing, most remote national parks, and most awe inspiring volcanic craters in the region. Because El Salvador is the only country in Central America that doesn't have a Caribbean coastline it is often overlooked by tourists. However, their loss is your gain if you are willing to take the road less traveled.
History
El Salvador is still healing from scars from a long Civil War that ended in 1992. The economy was weakened by natural disasters like Hurricane Mitch in 1998 and two destructive earthquakes in 2001.
Currency
The currency is the US dollar, and prices tend to be slightly inflated compared to neighboring countries as a result.
Attractions
There are plenty of things to do in El Salvador. Zip-lining on a Canopy Tour, visiting Joya de Ceren, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, hiking to the beautiful a volcanic Lake Coatepeque, or trekking to important Maya sacrificial sites like Puerta del Diablo or Tazumal are just some of the many options available.
