Peruvian Andes Travel

Many travelers don't venture past Cuzco and Machu Picchu when visiting the Peruvian Andes. This is a shame, as there is much more to be seen. For example, the famous Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world; the stunning Parque Nacional Huascarn, home to Peru's highest peak; and the Colca Canyon, one of the deepest canyons in the world, to name a few.

Lake Titicaca is the world's highest navigable lake at two and a half miles above sea level stretching from southern Peru to the Bolivian Andes. Besides spanning beautiful landscapes that reflect on its transparent waters, Lake Titicaca is home to some beautifully unique settlements on man-made reed islands and cultures following agricultural techniques used for centuries.

The mountain town of Arequipa(pop. 635,000) is special for its tranquil atmosphere, stunning volcanic surroundings, ancient churches, monasteries, convents and day-trips into nearby Colca Canyon, one of the deepest canyons in the world.

The Parque Nacional Huascarn(Huascaran National Park) spans 340 sq km and includes Peru's highest peak, Huascaran at 6,768 m (22,199ft), Cordillera Blanca and Cordillera Huayhaush, two glacier-topped mountains with excellent trekking, biking and climbing.
