Guanajuato, Len, San Miguel de Allende, & Guadalajara

Northwest of Mexico City, the state of Guanajuato sits atop the great plateau near the geographic center of country. It is home to several interesting cities, including Guanajuato, Len, and San Miguel de Allende. All three were founded in the middle of the sixteenth century by miners dedicated to extracting gold and silver from the surrounding mountains. Nearly 500 years later, much of the population still works at pulling minerals from the mountains but many more have turned to agriculture, making Guanajuato one of Mexico's most productive agricultural regions. The scenery, colonial architecture, and provincial feel of this area is worth the trip.

Southwest of Guanajuato, in the state of Jalisco, is the consummately Mexican city of Guadalajara - it is the birth place of mariachi music, tequila, and the broad-brimmed sombrero among a number of other things purely Mexican. And, although it's the country's second-largest city, Guadalajara has few of the drawbacks that dog Mexico City . It's bright and modern and offers a vibrant culture, a plethora of historic buildings, excellent museums and galleries, exciting nightlife, and good hotels and restaurants.
