Guatemala - Highlands & Lowlands

Visiting Guatemala’s western highlands is a cultural experience unparalleled in all of Central America. In this region, the market town of Chichicastenango, the Ixil Triangle, which is comprised of the three very traditional towns of Nebaj, Chajul, and Cotzal, and the Cuchumatanes mountains are highlights.

Northeast past the mountains and into the lowlands of Petén, awaits an equally fascinating chance to experience the archeological remnants left behind by the ancestors of the modern day Mayan living in the western highlands. The Mayan ruins here are nothing less than spectacular. They include the famous ruins of Tikal, a number of very interesting smaller sites, such as Yaxhá and Uaxactún, and the remote (several days of difficult travel) but magnificent sites of El Mirador and Nakbé.
