Costa Rica Geography & Biodiversity Info

Although only roughly the size of Nova Scotia or West Virginia, Costa Rica has a remarkable variety of terrain and an incredible array of species - it is widely held that Costa Rica contains at least 5% of the earth's entire biodiversity.

Four mountain ranges traverse Costa Rica, running from the northwest to the southeast, and form five different climatic and geographic zones.

These include a fertile Central Valley, tropical Northern Plains, the Guanacaste Lowlands, and Tropical Lowlands along the Pacific and Caribbean coasts.

The stunning diversity of flora and fauna that live in these areas include large mammals, such as the tapir, ocelot, and jaguar, colorful birds, such as the scarlet macaw, toucan, and quetzal, reptiles, such as the pot-bellied iguana and poison dart frog, and thousands of species of insects and plants.
